Grants
Many government agencies and programs offer subsidies to individuals and companies for the purchase of adapted vehicles, which can considerably reduce your purchase bill.
Note that some programs require that you apply before you purchase your vehicle.
So it’s important to check with these organizations before making your purchase.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of the various grants and subsidies available.
Companies
Subsidy programs for accessible collective vehicles (PSVCA)
This program offers financial assistance for the acquisition of adapted vehicles to facilitate transport for people with reduced mobility.
This program is designed to support organizations and companies in the purchase of accessible collective vehicles, thereby improving the mobility and inclusion of people with disabilities in the community.
The amount of the subsidy can be up to $35,000 for an adapted minivan.
Individuals
Vehicle adaptation program for the disabled (PAV)
The aim of the program is to enable people with disabilities to drive a vehicle independently and safely, or to gain access to it, thanks to financial assistance for vehicle adaptation.
The program also reimburses additional adaptation-related expenses, such as repairs, mechanical checks and familiarization sessions for driving the adapted vehicle.
Each request is subject to a comprehensive, personalized assessment of the applicant, and a rigorous eligibility analysis.
Exemption from GST and QST on adaptations
Modification services performed on a motor vehicle in order to equip or adapt it for use by a person in a wheelchair, or for the transportation of such a person, as well as the goods supplied with these services, with the exception of the vehicle itself, are zero-rated.
Tax deduction for medical expenses
Disabled people and their dependents can claim a modified vehicle as a medical expense on their federal income tax return.
Up to twenty percent of the van’s purchase price can be deducted, to a maximum of $5,000.
The vehicle must have been modified within six months of the date of purchase.
The amount declared must not include the cost of modifying the vehicle.
Toyota Mobility Assistance Program
To help cover the cost of installing adaptive driving aids or mobility assistance equipment, the Toyota Mobility Program offers an allowance of up to $1,000 to customers who acquire a new or eligible Toyota vehicle and require financial assistance to cover the cost of installing adaptive driving aids or mobility assistance equipment.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Canada’s Autohabileté Program
FCA Canada will give you up to $750 to purchase and install adaptive equipment for the driver or passenger on your Chrysler van.
